A little walk around our farm was all it took to inspire this little shoot. It is far from perfect and I didn't do a fancy job editing these images, just ran them through lightroom really quick, but none the less it is super cool to see how just a simple flash and gel can alter an image so much!
My initial thought was lets go for a sunset look, so I threw a couple CTO gels on my flash. Here is a pullback. I did of course move the flash around to different areas to get different angles of light, etc.
Here you can see some of the results of the orange/sunset type look from the gelled flash.
For a bit of contrast, I then put a blue gel on the camera to take a look at how that comes through in the images.
And why not a little green, maybe not my style or quite right for pinecones, but kinda cool too.
And to give you an idea of the day and because I am first and foremost a natural light photographer, here are some natural light images on the same pinecones, in the same location.
I had a blast gelling the flash and taking some test images, but I still have a heart for natural light images and love those as well. I hope you enjoyed this quick little test shoot and it inspires you to get out and practice your flash skills as well. It can be really rewarding and help you to become a more well rounded photographer!
