I was searching for a wedding photographer about the time I decided I wanted to start a photography business, but before I was really far enough in to know all the ins and outs of the industry and tips and tricks. So I know first hand that it can be crazy overwhelming, so many different options, prices, styles, levels of experience! Here are a few things I wish I would have known when searching for a wedding photographer that I hope you find helpful in your own personal search.
1. There are so many photographers out there!
Thing first thing I found out is everyone has a cousin or a friend or a favorite photographer they follow online and it can be overwhelming. My tip to you is decide on your budget and style and then focus on photographers who fit in those categories, this will help narrow down the options for your search.
2. You get what you pay for.
This is and isn't true, but as a general rule of thumb you really do get what you pay for. The exception is some talented students who are still portfolio building and occasionally a talented photographer who simply has their work undervalued.
3. The good photographers book up quickly!
We chose a date about 10 months out from our engagement and started contacting photographers after we booked our venues and was surprised to find many of them already booked up! Maybe we just had a popular date, but from my experience its more so that they popular photographers book up quickly, so if you know who you want, don't wait to contact them and get them booked for your date.
4. Who you choose as a photographer matters.
Not only is it important to pick a photographer who fits your style, but also your personality. Turns out if you hire your photographer for all day coverage, you will probably spend more time with them than any other person on your wedding day. Picking someone who you feel like could be your BFF never hurts.
5. A good wedding album is an investment, but a worthy investment.
After the wedding day we took the pictures we got from our photographer and did what many DIY couples do, we uploaded them to Shutterfly and redeemed a few coupons to get some cheap photobooks. A couple years later I invested in a true wedding album and it is the best decision ever. This is a special day of your life, at least in my opinion those photos deserve to be presented in a beautiful and memorable way!
